My parents’ Kenmore Elite freezer was beeping at them for weeks, displaying a “b” on the LED screen.
I wasn’t able to find much good info on the web about how to replace the battery so I decided to write this short blog.
It needed a new 9v battery which is replaced on the front of the freezer below the door.
Thanks! I read every page of the manual and couldn’t find the battery compartment. Your blog info is just what I needed!
This posting could not have been more timely. I have just been through two hurricanes (Gustav and Ike) and today is the first time in ten days that we have actually felt comfortable enough to put something in the frezzer. The light was flashing and I figured we had blown something up. I guess the battery went dead – flashing for 10 days and I can not recall the last time I repleced it or HOW I replaced it. It’s the simple things in life……..
I like the internet, it is a place where you can find anything. We had no idea it was the battery. Thanks for posting the information.
THANKS for the great tip. I would add that the battery is in different locations on different models. Ours is on the left side at the bottom behind a small door. Inside our freezer on the lid is a list of what the codes mean. GOOD LUCK!!
Awesome. Our freezer did the same thing and we couldn’t find the manual nor figure out how to replace the battery. Technology is so great, isn’t it?
Very helpful–our freezer stopped working and the damned beeper starfted–after calling Sears and being told that they would have to send a service tech out to fix the problem, I checked this site, changed the battery and all is well. The battery location is ridiculous.
Thanks.
I do not remember where my manual for my freezer. Anyone out there no what the letters CE stand for.
Thanks a bunch! We purchased our freezer used and didn’t get the manual so when it started beeping when we got it home I thought we got hosed but after looking up your blog it worked out geat! thanks for taking the time and see how many people are positively affected!
Darn thing buzzed for days between “b” and temperature. Reset didn’t work. Never associated the “b” with a low battery; had it figured out for a “6”. as in 6 degrees F. Thanks a million for the info. It was much appreciated.
Thanks! This worked for me too. Replaced the 9v battery and all is well. I too thought the “b” showing in the display was a 6, and the freezer was failing. Whew! What a relief…
Thanks sooooo much. Ours kept beeping too, and I too, thought the freezer was failing. The web is such a wonderful tool!
Thank you so much. I can’t tell you how long I’ve been trying to figure this out and stop that infernal beeping. You’re a saint.
Thank you SO much. The beeping was becoming unbearable.
Thank you so much! Once I saw the pic, I remembered seeing it when we first bought the freezer 5 1/2 years ago. What a long-lasting battery we had! Thanks again.
Oh Wow!! I guess I’m not the only one who had to endure that incessant beeping. I too associated the ‘b’ with a 6 for degrees. Truth be known we have had to reset that darn thing every day for the last 2 years. You are a god send.
Freezer was beeping for days. Thanksgiving day I decided I couldn’t take it any more. Googled. Beeping kenmore elite freezer. Came upon your blog. Picture is fantastic. Went to the garage. 10 minutes later. FIXED. Thank you so much.
Hi:
Where is the battery located? Thank you!
Hi:
Where is the battery located? Thank you! Mine is a large chest freezer.
Wow, we kept hitting a button on the front and it would stop for 5 minutes, then start again. It was awful. So glad you posted this.
Thanks for taking the time to share this valuable information.

This blog changed our lives!! We’ve been a slave to our freezer for 4 years and hoped it would wear itself out…. Wishful thinking I guess. I stumbled upon this page and ran down to the freezer to investigate the battery! It worked!!! Hallelujah praise the Lord! You were an answer to our prayers!! Haha. Thanks so much! 🙂
-Freezer slaves set free!
Yay! Thank you, yes Sears wanted to send someone out. I really don’t know how I would have reacted to that.
How awesome you are, to relay this info. I , like many others, have a manual that is mia, pulled up this website and , low and behold , here is the answer to our problem.I too thought the b was a 6… Crazy Stuff!
Again Thank You!
Where is the battery on a chest freezer?
THANK YOU!! My freezer was beeping all weekend! I couldn’t find where the battery was! It’s not in the maual as stated….
This must be on stand up versions only, mine is a chest freezer and i’m not sure where to look
I just moved my freezer (4 years old) to another location. When I plugged it back in the display screen worked fine for about 2 hours, then shut off completely, and the beeping began. If I hit reset it shuts off for 12 hours and then begins again. The freezer itself is working just fine, it just has no display screen and the ever annoying beeping! I changed the battery but still no display and the beeping continues. Can anyone help? Thanks!
Thank you, check down at the Greyhound Station, I am sending you my firstborn son in return for this information! He eats a lot but is really a good kid and we are so thankful for getting rid of the beeping that we feel it is worth the trade.
Thanks so much! I just got through Hurricane Irene. Could not figure out what the freezer’s problem was. I thought it was cycling between zero and 6 degrees. Who would have thought a battery was the problem? Thank heaven our freezer is in the garage otherwise I would be a raving lunatic.
WOW! Thank you for taking the time to post this blog. It saved all of us a lot of time. Thank you thank you!
If you are in front of the chest freezer the battery compartment is on the left side close to the bottom and it is a small plate just big enough to fit a 9v battery
Great site….it was first in the search and quickly helped me to look under the door.
Thanks.
Gosh – like others I read the manual front to back and then again. I see they talked about the battery … but did not note how to change it. I appreciate this web site as it saved me a service call for a couple dollar battery. God Bless you and thanks again.
Mahalo for your post! The beeping from the freezer was driving me insane…Your blog is a gift that just keeps on giving.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, The beeping has been going on for a few weeks.
Wow, this info was posted in 2008 and I was able to use it today. Spent a day looking for the stupid battery housing. Should of did a google search first. Thanks for posting this info.
I can’t find it need help any one 8706130209
Wow this realy helped I was about to break the screen on the freezer…… then I thought let me do some research…… so with the picture and your instructions all went well……ThAnKs A MILLION! Your the. Best
Thanks, just the information I needed. Was leaving town, and didn’t want to torment our cat-sitter for three days with the bleeping “b” ping. Replaced the 9V, and all was humdrum and whir, again.
Thanks for this! Mine was beeping after several years and I finally found the battery door – left side, bottom right corner.
Had power outage due to Sandy and freezer was beeping. There was a sticker which says “b” means need battery replacement but could not locate the battery changing location. Googled and landed on this site. This Information was most helpful
Thank You
Thank you! Thank you! My chest freezer started beeping a few days ago. I would hit reset and it would go away for several hours but then come back. I discovered that like many others mine was a”b” and not a “6”. Battery compartment is on right at the bottom ( odd placement). Replaced now no more beeping
As with everyone above, after a power outage, was afraid it meant 6 degrees and could not get the beeping to stop. Thank you so very much for posting this for all of us and saving our sanity!
Looks like this has helped a lot of people — us included! I still find it incredible how information like this can be found so easily with just the typing of a few words into the search engine! We too thought the b was a 6 for the past several days,
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU. I found the outer cover as well as inner lid to be impenetrable without practically breaking them, but then maybe that’s just me.
The information is still invaluable halfway through 2013! I too thought it was flipping between 6 and 0 rather than a b, but after looking at your info and picture dimly remember putting the battery in when we first purchased it. Thank you!!
I thought my freezer troubles were over when I found this blog but can’t even find the battery door on my Sears Elite chest freezer. I bought mine this summer, second hand. Here’s what mine does: It shuts itself off every three days to the minute. This took me most of the summer to figure out so now I just put it on my iPhone calendar and I don’t have to check it every few hours. It has an led display on the lid which reads: Quick Freeze On/Off, a power button, and another light labeled Temp Alarm, Alarm Off. It’s not such a hassle now that I’ve figured out how long it takes to turn itself off but I’d still like to know why it picks three days and how to make it work properly.
On my chest freezer it was on the left end standing in front of, little plastic door that only fits the 9 volt battery.
Wow! I have been tearing my hair out trying to figure why my freezer kept beeping and displaying what I thought was a “6”!! I would unplug the unit for a few minutes and back in and that seemed to help for a couple of weeks, now it won’t…….. duh – battery! I just changed it out and it’s just like new! Thanks for this post!!!!!!
Thank you so much for the info! I would have never found it on my own…
